NICO Life 2019 Tilinanu Golf Day

Lilongwe-based golfer Stafford Mpoola walked tall on the greens of Lilongwe Golf Club (LGC) on Saturday 7th September 2019 after beating a field of 112 golfers to win the NICO Life Insurance Company Limited Golf Tournament.

Mpoola had 38 points—17 front and 21 at the back— to count out closest challenger Mohammad SuhailKasmani to second position while Rashid ‘Rashy’ Gaffar was third on 37 points. Justin Mkandawire was nearest to the pin while Sean Raman had the longest drive.

In the ladies section, Cathy Wakadiwa-Matura was the champion after bagging 36 points, Immaculate Singano was second with 35 points while Bose Kampulutsa was third with 34 points. Sheila Chinkhandwe was nearest to the pin awhile Sandra Komakechi had the longest drive. The winners in men’s and women’s categories took home K150 000 shopping vouchers plus a trophy each.

In his speech Mpoola thanked NICO Life for sponsoring the tournament. “It was a great tournament. I enjoyed my golf though it was windy. I just played my usual golf and tried to enjoy it as much as I could. It’s great to have won against some of the best golfers in the land,” he said.

On her part, Wakadiwa-Matura said: “My playing partners were all men and I guess this encouraged me to play on their level. I am so happy to have won today. Many thanks to NICO Life.”

The tournament drew golfers from Blantyre, Lilongwe, Kasungu and Dwangwa.

NICO Life Chief Executive Officer Eric Chapola described the golf as a success. “The turnout was excellent. It was a full course.  Golf is a medium to associate with business captains. We believe now we have captured the Lilongwe market. It’s a development area for our business,” he said. Chapola also briefed golfers on new product Tilinanu Funeral Policy. “This is an individual policy which can be purchased by any eligible individual. The policy pays up to K1 million in case of death. The minimum premium is K800 per month. A member who buys this policy can add a spouse plus four children and also four parents plus six extended members,” he said.

NICO Life also donated K300 000 towards maintenance of the golf course.

LGC captain Brigadier General ChikunkhaSoko described the tournament as a big success.
