NICO LIFE SPLASHES NETBALL PRIZES
Chauka Sisters netball team, on June 10, 2008 went away with K30,000 after emerging first in the Mzuzu District NICO Life Insurance trophy.
Chauka, who are also Northern Region netball defending champions amassed 15 points in all five games played.
Rivals, Kato and Moyale Sisters came second and third after netting 12 and 9 points, respectively to earn themselves cash prizes of K20,000 and K15,000, respectively.
in Nkhata Bay, Kawalazi were first while Chintheche Escom and Nkhata Bay Sisters followed the order of events with Mzimba North producing nine teams. Tafika were champions with 24 points in 8 wins.
Ekwendeni CDSS were runners-up with 21 points while Enyezini closed the paid ranks with 15 points in five games.
In Karonga, Medicals Sisters were top with 12 points, winning all their four games, opening a 3-point gap lead against Malema Sisters who finished Second with 9 points in three wins as Chilumba Garrison were third with 6 points.
Yamiba CDSS dominated Chitipa District with 15 points winning all five games played to allow MBC Sisters come second with 12 points for Chitipa secondary school to be third with 9 points.
Mzimba South produced Bruce as stars on 15 points while Procaine got 12 points to be second in four wins, Escom was third on 9 points.
Rumphi Medicals clinched top prize with 12 points, Escom were second on 9 points while Rumphi Secondary School trailed with 6 points in two wins, but four games.
Likoma Sisters were first in their district with 12 points as Khayiko were second on 9 points to force Likoma Medicals to come third with 6 points in four games played.
Speaking before presenting prizes, marketing manager for NICO Life, Arnold Nyirenda said the motive behind sponsoring the K1.75 million trophy in the Northern Region was to plough back to the society in appreciation of the business the company benefits.
"NICO as a company that creates wealth for the people through loans that we disburse, thought it wise to appreciate the vital business that you give us by ploughing back through provision of the social entertainment," said Nyirenda,
He said, besides entertainment, the nation is bound to produce netball stars who can ably represent it at international games and later empower themselves economically through prizes they win.
In their remarks, regional sports development officer for the North, Georgina Msowoya and the trophy's general secretary for the region, Alick Mkandawire, thanked NICO for the trophy, which they said help to improve the standard of netball.
